As we get older our learning and memory abilities begin to fade, they begin to decline. The disruption of deep non-REM sleep is an underappreciated factor that is contributing to cognitive decline or memory decline in aging. And most recently we've discovered in Alzheimer's disease as well. It's not just important that we understand what stage it is that is mechanistically transacting these memory benefits, but there are real pragmatic and clinical implications here.
