The Problem With the Definition of Consciousness
Most commonly used definition of consciousness doesn't really provide a threshold which is part of the problem. It means that it takes a while for that aspect of self-consciousness to develop in humans. At the other end you might say something about responsiveness to pain and here I have a lot more sympathy so you can look at what animals will do when they are subjected to something damaging or painful.
