The perception of being the best creates more powerful marketing leverage than just about anything. People want to work with winners, and second place is the first loser. If I'm first in a bunch of small markets, I can roll them up and consolidate it. And all of a sudden take over and be first in a large market. This is why you see massive expertise and success stories seemingly come out of nowhere because they got first in a couple small markets.
