In 1917, 10 years before the massacre, Nellie's uncle died and left behind an 80-acre farm in Bath, Michigan. Andrew Kehoe was described as highly sociable, even though he was also known to be a highly distant person who enjoyed setting himself apart from others. He regarded himself as superior to the rest of Bath because of his self education, despite the fact that he was a farmer with middling to low success at best.
