We're new to space so cautious first steps make sense, but caution is not the same as agreeing to an eternal policy of waiting in terror for real data. Not all species might act the same, that's what we call non-exclusivity - certain behaviors cannot be assumed to be universal among space-capable civilizations. We can assume math and rocket science are pretty universal to space-cap capable civilizations,.
