Reagan's Use of the Word Deregulation
Carter was trying to pursue more free markets with also a more human face, if you want to think about it, a more humane version of it. Reagan uses the word deregulation not just to refer to creating competitive markets where they haven't been before but to weakening protections like environmental laws or workers' rights. The whole argument of this neoliberal economic program is that there's no middle ground. There are all kinds of middle grounds, and you only had to look at the social democracies in Europe or places like Australia or Canada to see them.
