The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells
Percival Lowell was one of the chief popularizers of the idea that you could see canals on Mars. H.G. Wells takes the plot of the most famous invasion novel and he basically just copies the plot, but makes the Martians instead of Germans. The War of the Worlds is not optimistic at all; it's a kind of reverse colonialism. It's pretty explicitly a sort of reverse imperialist, reverse colonialist thing.
