Napoleon's Unhappiness at Brienne
Despite his talents and later academic success, it's clear he was underachieving. Taken together with his moodiness and social isolation, I think it's safe to say he was a bit depressed. Napoleon channeled his unhappiness at Brienne into his feelings of Corsican patriotism. He wrote stories about Corsican heroes violently avenging their country on its occupiers.
