How Do These Chemicals Support Learning and Memory Formation?
The most common chemical in the brain is called glutamate. And that's what we call an excitatory neurotransmitter. So when the first neuron releases chemicals and they pass across to the second neuron, they can either make it more likely that that neuron sends an electrical message or less likely. The more often you activate those pairs of neurons, the more glutamate the first one produces,. And the more receptors for that glutamate, the second one produces.
