The Grocery Store Changed Everything
In 1930, a gentleman named Michael Colin comes along and he kind of put some of these ideas together to make this like kind of big leap into the supermarket of today. He has this idea that if he can take everything and make it cheaper and pass those savings on to consumers, he'll get them to buy more. So first, he like blows out the footprint of the store. You're suddenly saving costs on warehousing because you don't need a giant warehouseIf your store itself can act as a partial warehouse. You start saving on labor because he adopts self selection. People were literally losing their minds.
