Why Is Playing Chess Hard?

Chess is hard because there are so many possible different positions, at least in terms of calculation. An average chess game goes for about what we call 80 ply in computing. In more simple games like Connect 4, for example, there's seven different columns you can drop your piece into. That means in any given position there's seven possible moves that can be made.
