Caracala's Universal Citizenship

In two 12 shortly after becoming emperor in his own right, caracala extended citizenship to every freeman in the empire. Slaves were still slaves, and women were still women. But by the stroke of a pen, or maybe the hammering of a chisel, every freeman within the borders of the empire became a citizen of rome. In an instant, one of the greatest legal distinctions of all time was blown to pieces.
