The Fall of China's Population

The fall in China's population is a direct result of the Chinese government's policies to control the previously rapidly increasing population. Most famously, a one-child policy was introduced in the 1980s. At the same time, India has kept growing - but its fertility rate is still significantly higher than China's current rate. And as India's population is so young on average, the population will continue to grow, even if the fertility rate drops below 2.1.
