The Basil Ganglia - A Very Conserved Structure
The basic structures in the basil ganglia are shared among all vertebrates. The reason why it's so well conserved is that it effectively allows a creature to set up an action without actually doing it. So if i'm holding in mind some idea about a particular goal or sub goal that i need to do, i can time exactly when that sub goal is allowed to start influencing my action.
