The Choice Between a Higher Good and a Lower Good

In heaven you have clearly an incommensurable good but in this life we do have goods which we can recognize are higher than others so what I'm trying to get out of is if one recognized that a good was higher why would one choose the lower good as lower. If we try to explain why he makes this choice rather than another one then we've explained away precisely the freedom of choice that the entire conversation rests on.
