As we move into the role of custodians of planet Earth, our ethics must be informed by the fundamental laws of the universe that have guided life's evolution across the ages. Energy is the currency of life and enables complex configurations of molecules like you and I to manipulate the world around us in the service of our goals. The actions we take that control energy flows to survive and thrive reduce entropy locally, while contributing to an overall increase in the entropy of the universe. We only need roughly 7,000 kilojoules to survive day to day but many 21st century humans use up to 30 times that amount to live their technologically advanced lives.
