The Importance of Panpsychism in Veganism
Francois: I think panpsychism is best combined with the view sometimes called like narrow sentientism or other version that says it's not just consciousness per se that gives a being rights and moral status. It's whether it has something like pleasure and suffering desire, whether it can value things as a kind of integrated whole. And I think that that probably is, is widespread in animals, but absent in plants, although there's a lot of uncertainty there. So I think it might contribute to a sense of kinship with maybe wonder at the world, although I don't think that physical is necessarily unable to say the same.
