In human studies, the whole forebrain looks like it's ice cold. It's just like it's still asleep while you're awake. We don't know when that brain is going to look like it has its normal metabolic status back. And I would suspect that if the vigilance is down, that probably some of these other higher cognitive functions will take the longest to recover from sleep loss.
