What's the Relationship Between Imperialism and Nationalism?

I worry really deeply that we're beyond a point where we can change things. How does this disavowal of imperial liberalism compare to and relate to the disavowals underpinning nationalism? And how have these two forms of identity, in both britain and the us,. How have they related to each other? Because it's also a chall ch to fit the metropole into the empire, just not a challenge that these imperial apologists are thinking very much about.
