CHAPTER

The Possibility of Overcoming the Vector Grounding Problem

The idea is that this kind of distributional relationship between words does not really solve the grounding problem. So can and do language models overcome that problem we say that they do, build on philosophical theories of representation to make that point. There is some empirical work by for example, Ellie Pavlick and collaborators that shows that you can find a structural correspondence or a homomorphism between representations of linguistic items and the structure of the world in certain domains. That already puts a little bit of pressure on this claim that there is a substantial distinction between form and meaning in language.
