Is the Sneaker a Soft, Souled Slipper?
The idea of the sneaker as a soft, souled shoe that you could sneak up on people in has been going around since late victorian times. The first reference is 18 95 and there's a lovely quote from 19 hundred which describe someone whose job on this earth was to put on a pair of pneumatic sneakers every morning and go out and investigate other people's affairs. In other words, this was really almost like a gum shoe, as you would say in america.
