In particle physics, the energy seems to be most important about any system. In quanta mechanics, let's put it this way, in classical mechanics, you never mentioned the word energy. The idea of cinetic energy was not one that was in newton's tool box. So hamiltonian mechanics starts with an equation for energy as a function of position and momentum.
