Is There Such a Thing in Middle-Earth?

I was happy for them to just be like random human sorcerers. And is there such a thing in Middle-Earth? Yeah, I think so. But if they decide to make him Gandalf, I am at peace with that decision. They were super cool villains though. I liked them. It's totally possible. This is something from the lore that I'm not familiar with, but I am at a loss at trying to figure out who these might be.
