Mary Shelley came back and said, I did not recognise him. His hair had fallen out. If he hadn't smiled at me, I wouldn't have recognised him. And it was that quote from Mary Shelley that was very speaking. It was quite important to put us into the context of Haslett's thinking about these matters and also his emotional makeup.
