The Haunting of Susan A. Mayhew

There is so much interpretation and Mayhew is part of generations of social investigators who go into the slums of London with something in mind. They're going there in search of something, which is probably the same thing that attracts us now as 21st century audiences. The more detail we have, the more we believe the narrative to be true. But in a sense, it's a convention. It's an effect of the text or the image. And I think as historians that's what we're looking at as well. Why does this thing make us believe it's true?
