The Different Approach to Pathogen Inactivation
There are two main technologies that we could discuss. One of these technologies is developed by Cirrus Corporation in California. They use a sorreline compound which binds to nucleic acids and when exposed to ultraviolet light, that bond becomes fixed between the two strands of DNA or between strands of RNA. So now you've activated any DNA containing material in blood. And as we know, the only DNA material in blood that we worry about is a viable lymphocytes. But it turns out that's a fringe benefit of the pathogen activation because it prevents lymphocyte from multiplying. Therefore we don't need to worry about graft versus host disease.
