The Connection Between Archaeology and Sci-Fi

In archaeology, you go digging for other worlds from the past and in sci-fi, you go exploring for alternative worlds in the future. So it's just a different temporal orientation, arguably. And also a lot of science fiction draws on archaeological research into past societies. It makes sense that humans would draw on resources from fully developed, but now extinct societies in order to build those kinds of worlds. Why not draw on the history of humans in order to imagine a potential future of humans and or non-humans? Yeah.
