The Negative Impact of Richard Nixon's Visit to China
Nixon gave away too much and got too little in return, says John Avlon. Mao may have played a better hand of poker than Nixon did, but he needed to meet with Nixon was the reason why he was there. The Taiwan issue on which Mao seemed to have won a major concession ultimately proved a disappointment. Washington's switching of diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing didn't come until after Mao's death.
