Trotsky was in Belgrade as the Serbian soldiers marched off to war. So he wrote, along with this shout, there enters into one's heart a peculiar, spontaneous feeling of tragedy. He really caught the sort of fever that swept over the Balkans. And it's really foreshadowing August of 1914.
