Alchemy in America

The son of John Winthrop, the governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony, was a full-blown alchemist. He actually went to Europe searching for rose accruions. Alchemy existed at Harvard in early days; Yale had presidents who were not only alchemists. And I think that it conferred a certain kind of a sentiment or a theme of consciousness to America about this obsession with transmutation.
