I think it's useful when you're working in an established code base already, because you can just look at how the other soft war developers on your team already implemented something. And i think that's actually one of the skills, and that comes much later for soft wear development - we spend so much time learning how to solve problems. The next stage is learning how to read other people's code really intentionally for how they solved a problem. But then really, my approach to learning those things is really inefficient, because what i tend to do is i'll jump right in without really reading te mentation, and make an awful mess of it.
