The Midrash Is a Jewish Interpretation of the Bible
Jewish scholar james cogl has written extensively on midrash. It's designed to pull out am out of the text. A lot of it is concerned with understanding biblical law, understanding jewish law. They're very attuned to things like repetition of words if it says the same thing in some ways. And they'll use those kinds repetitions to extrapolate into the text.
