Wine production turned into like a full on industry in greece, even more so than it was in egypt. By 400 to 300 b c e it took its place alongside olive oil and grain as one of the big three products of economy and commerce in the mediterranean. In ancient rome, there was a law that allowed a man to divorce his wife if she had been drinking. And alcohol consumption by women could also be punishable by death, which is what happened to one woman who died via starvation after being caught with the keys to the wine cellar.
