The Importance of Polarized Training

The evidence supporting polarized training is actually quite weak when you look at it. The autonomic responses that have been measured have been measured using heart rate variability measures, and they seem to resolve within 60 to 70 minutes of the end of a training session. It's an outcome that I think has become now a target and as soon as something becomes a target it's stop being useful. And so if you think about how intensity domains are partitioned in an elite athlete you have a very, very large moderate intensity domain. That suggests that perhaps athletes are focusing on sweet spot work more than we might think they are.
