The Romans were forced to retreat after a defeat at Gegovia in 49 BC. Caesar was facing the fight of his life, and had no choice but to take on Gallic king Versingeterics' army as they retreated from Rome. He surrounded Alicia with walls so that only those trapped inside would be able to escape. The Gauls could not hold out for much longer; their numbers dwindled by the day. But then word came of a new wrinkle: A relief force was heading towards them. With time running out, Caesar ordered another wall built - this one facing away from the enemy.
