Diapeso Are Dipes Instead of Nappies?

purple person andrew wilkinson wrote in to say that he had been re reading george orwell's great novel 19 84, and he was surprised to see that diapeso were dipes instead of nappes. So has the word diper been used in british english at any stage? And if not, why did orwell, use it her? It comes from the greek diaspros, meaning across white. Originally denoted quite a costly fabric. But after the fifteenth century, it was used in the sense that we know it as to day.
