Sound travels at roughly one foot per millisecond. If you're 10 feet away from someone, it takes you 10 milliseconds to actually hear something that they say or a note that they play on their instrument. When we play music with a group, our brains are used to having people that are a certain distance away. Once they get further than 25 feet away from you, it becomes really hard for you to stay in sync with them.
