i have to say that this was the easiest book i've ever written. And it came out of a a frustration, because i had just spent a long time, a rewriting, for the th time, a novel about my grandfather. It's also because i think i have discovered in me a kind of reticence about fiction in general. So modern society, modern consciousness, is essentially fictional. Fictive in the sense that it takes ideas that are not true and makes them as true as possible. That's what a novel does. A novel is about something that's imagined.
