The Impact of Defense Spending on the Economy

Mariko: I want to dig in a little more on the relationship between economic health and defense spending. In your views, what is the impact of defense spending on a country's larger economy as a whole? And vice versa, what are the impact of domestic economic opportunities or problems such as debt, taxes, innovation and investment on increases or contractions in a country's defense spending? Bill Clinton: By and large, it's not useful to think of defense spending as being a fantastic boost for an economy. It's more likely over time to be a drag on an economy, but a necessary drag in order to preserve security. Economies hate wars.
