The pivotal moment that led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act was the Bloody Sunday March in Selma, Alabama. The march shook the conscious of the nation like no other. Eight days later, Lyndon Johnson introduced the voting rights act. It passed six months later in August of 1965 and it really was a revolutionary piece of legislation.
