As i get older, i find noise more rum annoying, meaning things i'm hearing i don't want to hear. It's not so much a matter of the beeping trucks as much as the whole idea of a sound escape and what we are so cavalier about. Sound is one of our most evolutionarily ancient senses. Our brain knows whether we're consciously aware of it or not. Meann noise is just a by product of our industrial society. And nobody has really thought about it. So you know, with this book, people will think about how important, how deeply importantsound is.
We undervalue our sense of hearing and we under-appreciate the impact sweet sounds and disturbing noises have on our well-being. Neuroscientist Nina Kraus of Northwestern University talks about her book, Of Sound Mind. Kraus argues that our listening affects our minds and brains in ways we ignore at our peril.
