Tulips and the Dutch Culture of the Time
Tulips originated in the Tian Shan Mountains at the border where China and Tibet meet Afghanistan and Russia. The plant then made its way to Turkey via the Silk Road later becoming a symbol of the Ottoman Empire. Of particular interest to Dutch tulip traders were broken bulbs whose petals showed a striped multicolor pattern rather than a single solid color. People did overspend on tulip bulbs and they did lose money according to goldgar in her book.
