I feel like there's often this tension between the convenience of life in this globalized, technologicalized era and the yearnings of actual experience. I remember very distinctly traveling when finding an internet cafe was like the pot of gold at the end of this rainbow that may or may not exist in a far-flung place. And on our first bike trip on the Silk Road in 2006, there was no social media there,. But if there was, I wasn't on it. It's pretty astonishing how quickly things have changed. You know, all the way across the Tibetan Plateau now, there's better cell reception.
