The Origins of Religion

In the Renaissance and Reformation, Europeans came up with this idea that there is this discrete socio-cultural domain where these activities belong. But if we go look at that word being used in the Greco-Roman world, it's not referring to that same package. And so when we try to talk about Israelite religion, maybe we are just talking about the way they worship God. We can find those elements in the ancient world, but I think it's important to recognize that's not the same thing as the baggage of our ideology or politics today.
