My Shake - A New App Delivers a 20 Second Warning Before an Earthquake Hits the Bay Area
A new app built by Berkeley researchers is warning people before earthquakes hit. This week, my shake successfully gave California residents a nearly 20 second warning before a 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Bay Area on Tuesday. The app delivered the notification to 95,000 devices. It works by collecting motion data from your phone and using a patented neural network to determine if the motion fits the model of an earthquake. Some 2 million people downloaded the app after Tuesday's successful warning.
