The Death of Mary Ashford
The body of Mary Ashford, 20, was found in a marshy pit on May 27, 1817. The autopsy and examination of the scene together painted a savage scene. Abraham Thornton had been seen with Mary alone several times the night of her death. For the blood stains, Thornton freely offered that he had been intimate with Mary Ashford the night before and had taken her virtue,. but with her consent and left her alive and well.
