It's not as if at any point in the history of physics, so many people have like so persistently tried to figure out what's up without anything yielding. It'd be interesting to see how much fundamental physics thought has echoed over time. If you can get even just a few facts about the world, right, then we'd be pretty confident that theory is correct. You don't have to discover new stuff to think you have the right theory.
