How to Choose the Right Maintenance Fluids for Your Patient

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends choosing normal saline. It's a pretty strong recommendation based on literature that I think is decent, but not strong enough to make that sweeping of a statement. And so my approach actually is to be a little bit more individualized in terms of what I think a patient's risk for hyponatremia or really their risk of dysnathemia. The decision to change things is based on labs and follow-up studies as we go.
