Bebop Scales - What Are They?
In the late 1940s, if you were wanting to play Bebop on the saxophone, you had two muddles to follow. Charlie Parker with his angular atonal melodic sense and fast virtuosic playing, or Dexter Gordon who would quote popular melodies in his own improvisations. John Coltrane's first instrument was the alto sax, and when he was primarily an alto player, he would copy Charlie Parker's style. When he switched to being primarily a tenor player, though he would always continue playing both instruments, he took up much of Gordon's mellow tone.
