Chair Elliott had about the continual disappearance of God because he looked at Nietzsche's pronouncement and said, well, God has vanished into the stratosphere of abstraction many times throughout history. The danger of an abstract God that can't be represented is that he becomes so detached from human affairs that it's as if he's not there. And so you are a patriot to your land, but that's nested under an affiliation to something that's absolute that isn't associated with nationalism. It begs the question too, is like, maybe there's a rank order of identity.
